Margaret + Charles Wedding day
Saturday 10th October 1835
Margaret Gaffney and Charles Haughery were married at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore (now commonly known as the Baltimore Basilica). The Rev Alexius Elder officiated at the ceremony in Baltimore Cathedral and these facts are recorded there in below.
Soon after their marriage with Charles been in very poor health, Margaret persuaded him that a change in climate might be therapeutic .So they left Baltimore on the ship Hyperion for New Orleans arriving on November 20th 1835.

The marriage of Margaret and Charles was solemnized by Rev. Alexius J. Elder at the Baltimore Basilica, formally known as the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As the oldest Roman Catholic cathedral constructed in the United States following American independence, the Basilica occupies a distinguished place in both the religious and architectural history of the nation and remains one of the most significant Catholic churches in the country.At the time of 1835, the cathedral was under the leadership of the Most Reverend Samuel Eccleston, the fifth Archbishop of Baltimore, whose episcopate contributed to the continued growth of the Catholic Church in the United States during the early nineteenth century.
Today, the Basilica serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, led by the Most Reverend William E. Lori, the sixteenth Archbishop of Baltimore, who was appointed to the archdiocese in 2012. The enduring prominence of the Baltimore Basilica links the marriage of Margaret and Charles to a landmark of American Catholic heritage whose history spans more than two centuries.
